What Is a Circuit Breaker?

A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect a circuit from damage caused by overcurrent, overload, or short circuit. When it detects a fault, it interrupts the flow of electricity — preventing wire overheating, equipment damage, and fire hazards. Molded Case vs. Insulated Case Circuit Breakers: How to Choose

The right circuit breaker type depends mainly on the amperage and application. For most projects up to roughly 1,000A — residential panels, small commercial buildings, and light industrial equipment — a molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) is the standard, cost-effective choice. For large plants, critical facilities, switchgear-mounted systems, or applications needing high short-circuit capacity and easy field maintenance, an insulated case circuit breaker (ICCB) is the better fit, since it is built for 800A–5000A loads and allows components to be serviced without replacing the entire unit.

What is the difference between a molded case and an insulated case circuit breaker?
Molded case circuit breakers (MCCBs) are fully enclosed in an insulated case and typically handle up to about 1,600A — the standard choice for residential, commercial, and light industrial panels. Insulated case circuit breakers (ICCBs) are built for 800A to 5,000A, use a two-step stored-energy mechanism, and allow trip units and contacts to be serviced without removing the whole breaker — making them the better fit for large facilities and switchgear-mounted systems.
How do I choose the right amperage rating for a circuit breaker?
The breaker’s amperage rating must match the maximum expected current draw of the circuit it protects, based on the wire gauge and connected load per NEC Table 310.16. Your electrician or engineer calculates this from the panel schedule and load calculations — our team confirms product availability and specs once you have the rating you need.

What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a fuse?

Circuit breakers are now the standard in most residential, commercial, and industrial systems because of this reusability and because they can be paired with GFCI and AFCI protection.
Do circuit breakers need to be GFCI or AFCI protected?
The NEC requires GFCI protection for outdoor receptacles, bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and other specific wet or damp locations, and AFCI protection for most bedroom and living-area branch circuits. Whether a given circuit needs GFCI, AFCI, or both depends on its location and use — your electrician determines the requirement for your specific panel.
Can I replace a circuit breaker myself?
In most areas, electrical panel work — including breaker replacement — requires a licensed electrician and a permit. Some states allow a homeowner permit for work on a primary residence under strict limitations, but this doesn’t apply to rental or commercial properties.
