ATEK Distribution in Minneapolis named SBA’s Minnesota Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year.

MINNEAPOLIS – The U.S. Small Business Administration has named ATEK Distribution, of Minneapolis, Minn., as SBA’s Minnesota Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year. The business is owned by Jeffrey Anderson and is among SBA awardees being recognized ahead of National Small Business Week for their efforts to empower entrepreneurial success, create jobs and drive economic growth.

“The Minnesota District Office is proud to recognize Jeff Anderson, president and co-founder of ATEK Distribution as the 2025 Minnesota Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year. Jeff’s leadership, dedication, and entrepreneurial spirit embody the values of perseverance and service that define our nation’s veterans,” said Brian McDonald, the SBA Minnesota District Director. “Through his commitment to innovation and business excellence, he has not only built a successful company but has also contributed to the strength of Minnesota’s economy. We are honored to celebrate his achievements and the impact he continues to make in the veteran business community.”

Anderson started his business in 2018 after more than 24 years in electrical manufacturing and distribution. ATEK Distribution has seen significant growth through leveraging SBA resources, including official status as a PRIME Contractor with the federal government. Prior to starting his entrepreneurial journey, Anderson served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he attributes learning the value of hard work, integrity, and a commitment to accomplishing the mission.

ATEK Distribution provides “Made in the USA” products and solutions to help reduce operation costs, and improve the health, safety, and well-being of employees and communities. This is primarily driven by the wholesale distribution of electrical construction materials, including wiring supplies, electrical light fixtures, EV charging stations, light bulbs, and solar and electrical power equipment.

In spring of 2021, Anderson connected with APEX Accelerators, an SBA resource partner, which assisted him in obtaining Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) certification. At least 5 percent of all federal contracting dollars each year are set aside for SDVOSB’s, and SBA and APEX Accelerators procurement assistance has played a vital role in ATEK securing several government contracts, and obtaining status as a PRIME U.S. Government contractor. ATEK Distribution is currently working to secure their place on the GSA schedule.

Alongside contracting technical assistance, Anderson also participated in the 2023 cohort of SBA’s T.H.R.I.V.E Emerging Leaders program, has a SCORE mentor, and has received several SBA loans to aid in the support and expansion of his business.

National Small Business Week 2025 will be held May 4-10 and will include a multiday virtual event open to all. Details on National Small Business Week, the virtual summit and registration are featured on www.sba.gov/NSBW and will be updated as additional information and activities are confirmed. Veteran-Owned Small Business Scales with SBA Contracting Assistance Programs

(Article written by SBA.GOV)

Jeff Anderson, President and Co-Founder of ATEK Distribution, started his business in 2018 after more than 24 years in electrical manufacturing and distribution. Just six years later, ATEK Distribution has seen significant growth through leveraging SBA resources, including official status as a PRIME Contractor with the United States Government.

Prior to starting his entrepreneurial journey, Anderson served as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps, where he attributes learning the value of hard work, integrity, and a commitment to accomplishing the mission. Those tenants serve as the building blocks for ATEK Distribution, where the focus is on finding the right solutions for diverse electrical needs, paired with unmatched customer service. One catalyst for starting ATEK Distribution was the industry need for smaller, family-owned businesses that could work as problem solvers with their customers – taking a flexible approach to a wide range of projects and needs. Community plays a critical role in the mission of ATEK Distribution, where Anderson makes it a priority to support local, and uplift other small businesses.

Located in Minneapolis, MN, ATEK Distribution provides “Made in the USA” products and solutions to help reduce operation costs, and improve the health, safety, and well-being of employees and communities. This is primarily driven by the wholesale distribution of electrical construction materials, including wiring supplies, electrical light fixtures, EV charging stations, light bulbs, and solar and electrical power equipment.

In an industry that is experiencing rapid growth and expansion, ATEK has stayed ahead of the curve through their efforts to be nimble and responsive. This was especially critical during 2020, where after just a couple years in business, there was major disruption in manufacturing and distribution. Anderson was able to pivot and start distributing PPE, which turned a challenge into an opportunity, as ATEK deepened current partnerships, and established new relationships. ATEK Distribution received a COVID EIDL loan and has since recovered from the impacts of the pandemic.

In spring of 2021, Anderson connected with APEX Accelerators, an SBA resource partner, who assisted him in obtaining Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) certification. SDVOSB certification makes businesses eligible to compete for sole-source and set-aside contracts. At least 5% of all federal contracting dollars each year are set aside for SDVOSB’s, and SBA and APEX Accelerators procurement assistance has played a vital role in ATEK securing several government contracts, and obtaining status as a PRIME U.S. Government contractor. This September, ATEK Distribution secured their place on the GSA schedule.

Alongside contracting technical assistance, Anderson also participated in the 2023 cohort of SBA’s T.H.R.I.V.E Emerging Leaders program. Each year, the Minnesota District Office offers the executive-level training series intended to give ambitious small business leaders a challenging opportunity to accelerate their growth through targeted training. Anderson has a SCORE Mentor, who provides a second opinion on ATEK Distribution’s growth plans. ATEK has also received several SBA Loans to aid and support the expansion of his business.

The future of ATEK Distribution is bright, with overarching goals to continue focusing on government contracting for sustained growth. Anderson shared that the most rewarding part of business ownership is supporting others – whether it be his own staff, or other small businesses.

The VIP START program opens doors to government contracting opportunities for ATEK Distribution

Minneapolis, 06/21/2024ATEK Distribution LLC recently completed the Veteran Institute Procurement (VIP) START Program, a comprehensive training and certification program that helps Veteran-owned businesses strengthen their ability to win government contracts and do business with both military and civilian agencies.

On June 13, 2024, ATEK Distribution LLC was one of 51 businesses from 19 states to graduate from the Veteran Institute for Procurement (VIP) START Program.

“I am extremely fortunate to have been selected to attend and graduate from the VIP START program. I do not know of a better setting to be taught and given the tools needed to work with the federal government. The networking and partnering opportunities provided will carry on for years to come.”

The first of its kind in the nation, VIP START is facilitated by subject matter experts from industry and government with a goal of increasing the participants’ ability to win and maintain government contracts. VIP START participants receive hands-on market-based instruction that helps establish best business practices for federal government contracting. There are over 20 topics taught, including law, accounting, insurance, human resources, marketing, and proposals.

“We are honored to give back to the men and women who served our country by providing them with the tools they need to succeed as government contractors,” said Barbara Ashe, President of the Montgomery County Chamber Community Foundation. “We hope this training fosters their success as businesses and employers.”

VIP START is a three-day, 27-hour comprehensive certification program. Participants must be a C-level leader in a Veteran-owned small business operating for at least one year with one year of revenue generation; owner must be a W-2 in their company or full-time employee and spend 100% of their time in their business. VIP START is fully funded by the Montgomery County Chamber Community Foundation, partnerships with SBA, Lockheed Martin, the State of Maryland, and VIP sponsors. VIP START is offered at no cost to participants.
